Steve discusses and demonstrates lighting, posing the model, developing the grisaille (charcoal underpainting), use of transparent washes to establish middle tones, building form and personality through the application of opaque paint, and finally the details of completing the portrait. Throughout the demonstration Steve explains, in an entertaining and understandable way, what he is doing and why, affording clear insights into his style, philosophy, and the techniques employed by the Old Masters.
